મારાઠાઓનું શાસન:
સન 1758માં સાદાશિવ રામચંદ્ર અને દમાજી ગાયકવાડ દ્વારા મોમીનખાન પાસેથી અમદાવાદ જીતી લેતાં, આજુબાજુનો વિસ્તાર પણ તેમની હકમાં આવ્યો. તે સમયથી આજેના ગાંધીનગર જિલ્લાની મોટાભાગની ગ્રામ્ય વિસ્તારો પર બડોદાના ગાયકવાડ શાસકોનો પ્રભાવ રહ્યો હતો. 1947માં બડોદા રાજ્યનું ભારત સંઘમાં વિલીન થતાં આ શાસન પધ્ધતિનો અંત આવ્યો.


આધુનિક યુગની શરૂઆત:
સયાજીરાવ દ્વિતીયના શાસનકાળથી આધુનિક યુગની શરૂઆત ગણી શકાય. પહેલાં ગ્રામજનોમાંથી મારાઠા સેનાઓ સીધો કર વસૂલતા. પરંતુ પછી ઇસ્ટ ઇન્ડિયા કંપનીએ કર વસૂલ કરીને બડોદાના રાજાને ચૂકવવા લાગ્યા. આમ, લોકો સીધા મારાઠા દબાણમાંથી મુક્ત થયા.


મહીકાંઠા એજન્સી:
મહીકાંઠા એજન્સી બોમ્બે પ્રેસિડેન્સીનો ઉત્તરપૂર્વ પ્રદેશ હતો. તે દરમ્યાન બાવીસી થાણા માટેના દાભોડા અને અન્ય ગામો તથા વસણા અને પેથાપુર જેવા રાજપૂત પાટા, ગાંધીનગરના હિસ્સા તરીકે ગણાતા હતા. મહીકાંઠાના મોટાભાગના નાયબો બડોદાના ગાયકવાડ શાસકોના રાજ્યવતી હતા.

1820માં બ્રિટિશ સરકારએ મહીકાંઠા માટેનો વહીવટ પોતે સંભાળ્યો અને 1821માં માઉન્ટ સ્ટ્યુઅર્ટ એલ્ફિન્સ્ટન, બોમ્બેના રાજ્યપાલ તરીકે અહીં આવ્યો અને શાંતિ અને વ્યવસ્થાને સુનિશ્ચિત કરવા માટે રાજકીય એજન્સી રચી.


સદ્રા – મહીકાંઠાની રાજકીય કેન્દ્રસ્થળી:
સદ્રા (વસણા રાજ્યનો એક ભાગ) 1811–12માં બ્રિટિશ શાસનની કેન્દ્રસ્થળી બન્યો. અહીં જૂના કિલ્લાની આજુબાજુ બ્રિટિશ મેજરે કેમ્પની વ્યવસ્થા ઊભી કરી. તેમનાં બંગલા, નાનકડું બજાર, હોસ્પિટલ, વિક્ટોરિયા લાઈબ્રેરી, ઘંટাঘર જેવી ઘણી સરકારી ઈમારતો બની. સદ્રા આસપાસના ગામો માટે વેપાર અને શાંતિનું કેન્દ્ર બની ગયું.


📜 આ ઇતિહાસ આપણને યાદ અપાવે છે કે કેવી રીતે ગાંધીનગરના વિસ્તારોમાં શાસન પદ્ધતિ અને સામાજિક ધોરણો બદલાતા ગયા અને વિસ્તાર આધુનિક વિકાસ તરફ આગળ વધ્યો.

ગુજરાત સરકારે ગાંધીનગરના મધ્યભાગમાં મહાત્મા ગાંધીજીના જીવન અને સિદ્ધાંતોને સમર્પિત કેન્દ્ર વિકસાવવાનું એક મહત્વપૂર્ણ પગલું લીધું છે. આ સ્થળને ‘મહાત્મા મંદિર’ તરીકે ઓળખવામાં આવે છે અને તેનો ડિઝાઇન મહાત્મા ગાંધીજીના સંદેશા અને જીવનશૈલીથી પ્રેરિત છે, જે ગુજરાતના વૈભવ અને વારસાને દર્શાવે છે.

મહાત્મા મંદિરનું લોકાર્પણ 1 મે, 2011ના રોજ થયું હતું. આશરે 34 એકર વિસ્તારમાં વિકસાવવામાં આવેલ આ સ્થાપત્ય વિધાનસભા ભવનના સામે, સેન્ટ્રલ વિસ્તામાં સ્થિત છે. અહીં મહાત્મા ગાંધીજીના જીવનના પ્રસંગોને દર્શાવતું પથ્થરની મૂર્તિઓ અને શિલ્પોનું બગીચું પણ બનાવવામાં આવ્યું છે.
